Fitger’s, which was started in 1857, was Duluth’s first beer brewery, at a site about a block and a half from the present site. The brewery used a small clear stream, which became known as Brewery Creek. In 1881, the brewer was purchased by Michael Fink, who built a new, larger brewery on the present Fitger’s site. Fitger’s produced strong beer for a total of 115 years. During the prohibition years the brewery stayed alive by producing new products, such as soda pop and candy. Fitger’s Brewery closed it’s doors on 1972. In 1984 the Fitger’s Brewery Complex as re-opened with a 48 room hotel, two full service restaurants and a retail center. The Fitger’s Brewhouse is again brewing beer on the premises.
