In my family, it was my Aunt Lydia whose Christmas gifts to my sisters and I always made us groan. Ripping off the wrapping to her packages gave us no thrill of anticipation. Instead, we would cringe, not knowing what type of horribly embarrassing Christmas present to expect. Pre-teen or tween girls, especially those you do not see every day, are hard to buy Christmas presents for. There are so many styles of clothes, jewelry and music, and you never know what age it is when they stop playing with dolls and start blotting their lipstick on boy band posters.
Even though Christmas gift buying can be tricky, there are several things that you should NEVER buy for a pre-teen or tween girl. Five of them are listed below.
Bad Christmas Gift – Bras, Training or Otherwise
The process of turning from child to teenager is fraught with worry for the pre-teen or tween girl. One of the biggest (or smallest) things that occupies her mind is the size of her burgeoning bosoms. Buying a bra for a girl who has not yet begun to develop is an attack on her womanhood to be. Buying a bra, especially one inelegantly called a training bra, for a well developed pre-teen girl is embarrassment to the Nth power.
Bad Christmas Gift – Feminine Hygiene
Yes, my Aunt Lydia once sent my sisters and I helpful little gift baskets complete with such festive Christmas gifts as tampons and feminine freshness wipes. These types of things are best left between the pre-teen or tween girl and her mother. There is no way to dress up a tampon with a Christmas ribbon, and opening the package in front of her father will not be a pleasant memory.
Bad Christmas Gift – Dolls and Toys
Pre-teen or tween girls, that is any girl in the eleven to thirteen range, has probably outgrown playing with dolls and toys. If they still play with toys sometimes, it has probably been transformed into a private pleasure. Getting a baby doll who wets and cries when you are twelve, or a play set with cute fuzzy animals that come with comes and brushes, screams that you are not as grown up as you want people to believe.
Shopping for Christmas gifts for pre-teen and tween girls requires some care and planning. Asking a parent about their particular tastes and interests is a great idea. If you prefer to surprise them, however, be sure you do not surprise them with Christmas morning mortification by giving them one of these three Christmas gifts to not give a pre-teen or tween girl.
