Gerber’s “Start Healthy, Stay Healthy” food plan for children is a great way to ensure that kids are getting exactly what they need from their meals. The Oatmeal With Bananas oatmeal cereal is one of the many flavors that Gerber currently manufacturers and it’s one that can be added to any type of food or served alone. Why add this to yogurt, blended fruit or oatmeal? It can help to thicken it and make it easier to serve and it contains a unique blend of vitamins and minerals called VitaBlocks that help with growth and development.
The eight ounce box contains about fifteen servings (1.4 servings) and can be made in the microwave or on the stovetop. I add this to fruit that has been put through the blender as well as yogurt, milk, juice, applesauce and oatmeal. One serving contains eleven grams of carbohydrates to provide lots of energy but there’s only three grams of sugar so kids aren’t going to get burned out easily after they have had a serving.
Each box comes sealed with a tamper evident protective plastic film and the “better if used by date” is clearly displayed on the top of the box. I purchase these at a local bulk warehouse type store for about $1.29 a box in the bulk pack. Even though they are in a bulk package, each box is individually sealed.
Gerber Cereal for Baby is precooked so all you have to do is add water or add it to something that is liquid. This makes feeding applesauce and yogurt to a toddler a lot easier and it fills them up. If you feed your child at eight in the morning and they are hungry an hour later, you may want to consider adding some of this cereal to their morning routine.
Some people say that adding this to a bottle clogs the nipple; yes, it very well can if you are using a slow flow one. If you want to add something to their milk before bed or in the morning and this doesn’t work out well with the nipple you are using, consider Gerber Single Grain.
What could be done to improve this product? The cardboard spout on the side of the package often collapses when you are trying to pour it out. I’d like to see this in a plastic container too’ something that is easier to take with you if you need to leave the house, are traveling or are on vacation. The cardboard containers are well made but you will notice that some cereal does manage to shake its way out of the bottom.
The taste is better than other flavored cereals and I really like the idea that it is ready to go from the box, no cooking necessary. It is a cost effective way to ensure that your child is getting the essential vitamins and nutrients that they need. While it is a little low in protein, only one gram per serving, this can easily be made up for with some milk.
