They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but it gets tiring sometimes to go to the same place for the same old thing. It is especially tiring if you have to make breakfast yourself everyday. Why not take a break and enjoy some of the breakfast joints around Austin and the surrounding areas to help your day start off right? Here are some of the best places in the Austin area to stop in and get a bite to eat before you start your day, whatever it is you do.
The Omelettry–located at 4811 Burnet Road in Austin, this place is reminiscence of a classic diner, complete with a bar with swivel chairs and checkerboard patterned floors. The prices here are excellent (you won’t spend more than ten dollars on a plate) and they boast some of the best pancakes in town (including gingerbread pancakes, which is a fan favorite). The coffee is always flowing, with the helpful wait staff walking around asking if you need a refill. I have only had breakfast here but the do offer a wide variety of food if you are the type to like lunch for breakfast. My favorite meal here is the “Economical” with scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes ( to share with my toddler who loves these pancakes like nothing else). An added bonus to the Omelettry is how much you feel at home here; this place has become a regular for me, with me going at least once every week or so and when I walk in everyone always has a smile for my son and me. They are especially nice to my son, always bringing him little toys to play with and that leads into another bonus to this place; it is very child-friendly. Before you go here be warned they are a cash only establishment; they do have an ATM where you can pull enough money out to cover your check but they do not take credit cards and they cannot split checks. Despite those little hang-ups, the Omelettry is one of the best places to go in the Austin area for breakfast. The phone number for the Omelettry is (512)-453-5062 (no website however).
Ross’ Old Austin Cafe–located at 11800 North Lamar Blvd #6, this place can boast traditional country breakfasts, including biscuits and gravy or chopped sirloin or a Tex-Mex breakfast which migas and breakfast tacos. They also have many great sides including grits, hashbrowns, or sweet rolls. My favorite here is the biscuits and gravy because they come absolutely smothered in that country white gravy with black pepper; it is delicious. They only serve breakfast from 7 am-11am and they are closed Sundays (which I found out the hard way, craving their biscuits and gravy one Sunday morning while pregnant only to go and discover they were closed) so remember to get there early if you want to try this place and that they are closed Sundays. Their prices are fair and decent ranging from $3.65-$8.95 on the breakfast menu. You will also enjoy the atmosphere here as well as it is a traditional country cafe with long wooden tables and a whole lot of Longhorn and Aggie gear (for those die-hard sports fans). Your day will start off right if you stop by here for a morning meal. The staff is also very friendly here and willing to sit and talk a spell if they are not too busy with other customers; plus they also tend to remember faces if you are a regular so you feel at home when you walk in and they recognize you. Their number is (512) 835-2414.
Cancun Mexican Restaurant–located right off the highway at 8210 N. Interstate 35 in Austin, this place is great for a quick breakfast before you start your day. They serve traditional Mexican food for breakfast which includes breakfast tacos, migas, and menudo. While I’m not brave enough to try menudo (if you don’t know what it is try it before you find out) my father and in-laws swear by it and say it is some of the best they have ever tasted. Of course I love the breakfast tacos here as they are reasonably prices and excellent tasting. The staff is also friendly here and it is also a children-friendly environment like the other establishments mentioned so you will feel comfortable coming here with the whole family. Once again, the prices are fair here as it is a small mom and pop place with never-ending coffee; many of times I have come here with my husband and his family to just have coffee, something small to munch on, and small talk. As I said before it is located right off the highway so you will see it as you drive downtown. The phone number is (512)719-9000.
These are some of the best places that I have found to eat in the Austin area if you want a break from the IHOPs and Denny’s. Hopefully they will become some of your favorite places too. Remember it is true what they say; breakfast is the most important meal of the day so start your day off with one of these places and you will have fantastic day indeed.
