No matter how much you are on the computer, there are still some things that can greatly confuse you. One of these things that has always taunted me is whenever I had to Zip or Unzip a file. Of course, my father taught me how to properly use the WinZip application, which basically does everything for you. However, there were still some processes that were completely confusing to me.
Such as, what exactly is a Zip file? Why do we need them? The basics of understanding what Zip files were was something that I set out to find out. And thankfully, I did. Now, I will expose what I learned to you, and hopefully reveal the mystery that is the Zipped file.
I suppose we should start at the beginning. So, what exactly is a Zip file? Basically a Zip file is a type of storage unit that actually holds the real file inside. Sometimes a Zip file is called an archive file, but normally it’s known as a Zip file.
The main purpose of a Zip file is to store and transport information. In a sense, a Zip file is like a Tupperware container, it safely stores all of its contents for transport. This is why whenever you download particular files, they come to you in a Zip file – it’s like getting your aunts meatloaf in her famous container after you skip out on Sunday lunch.
A Zip file works by actually compressing the file into a smaller size, sometimes up to 90% smaller. If you want the file to be protected, you can even put a password on the Zipped file. So, now that you understand how the Zip file works, comes the fun part, actually unzipping the file.
This can be done through several different processes; however the most common form is by using a program to do the work for you. The main program that millions of people use to unzip their files is WinZip and WinRAR. Both of these products are extremely simple to use and completely make the process of zipping and unzipping a breeze.
So now that you have the Zipped file, and you have WinZip to completely finish downloading the file, what’s next? First off, double-click the Zip file that you want to extract. There will be a prompt from your computer after doing so. This prompt will ask you either, “Unzip or install from an existing Zip file,” which will take you to the WinZip Wizard who will finish extracting the files for your.
Or you will be asked, “Extract files to…” then you will go through a very similar process via the WinRAR Wizard. After you have extracted the files from the Zip folder, go back and make sure that you delete the Zip files. This is only to help free up storage space on your hard drive, because you will basically have two different versions of the downloaded file.
As you can see, handling a Zipped file isn’t very difficult, and thanks to the wonders of WinZip and WinRAR, you will be able to accurately extract your downloaded files. After handling Zipped files for a while, you will completely understand how wonderful they actually can be. So go now, and unzip all the Zipped files that you want!
