Fans of Grey’s Anatomy should recover from the loss of character Dr. Addison Montgomery (formerly Montgomery-Shepherd) this season after the first few episodes. All the leftover love triangles, relationship dramas, and unanswered questions return, with new characters and twists to complicate the love lives and relationships of the Grey’s Anatomy cast.
Love Triangle History
Grey’s Anatomy has thrived on offering viewers a peek into the world of relationships that often include three people instead of two. The three-way relationship dilemnas almost always add complications and romantic angst to the lives of the characters involved. The triangle that fueled the love triangle trend began with the one night stand turned romance between doctors Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey. Add one current estranged wife to the mix and Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd suddenly appeared in Seattle to create the emotional Addison-Derek-Meredith triangle. Meredith’s “choose me, love me” scene has become a Grey’s Anatomy classic.
Look back a little further and discover that Meredith’s mother, the famous Dr. Ellis Grey, had been carrying on a long term affair with the married Chief of Surgery, Dr. Richard Webber in the past. Dr. Webber ultimately refused to leave his wife, essentially damaging this love triangle, but leaving the question of “what if,” lingering between the two and giving Dr. Webber a sense of surrogate fatherhood towards Meredith.
Grey’s Anatomy intern, Isobel Stevens is no stranger to love triangles. In an earlier season, “Izzy” found her relationship with Alex threatened by his philandering with another woman in the bunk room. She later ends up in a love triangle with Alex and a dying patient(Denny), who she ultimately chooses. Last season, Izzy steamed up Seattle Grace with the friendship-turned one night stand-turned love drama that emerged between Izzy and George. This triangle is complicated by George’s earlier elopement and sudden marriage to Callie. Season 4 will return with all the love triangle tension started between Izzy, George, and Callie.
Future Love Triangle Predictions
Season 4 of Grey’s Anatomy will undoubtedly continue the tradition of leaving Seattle Grace doctors the victims of their own complicated relationship webs and triangles. After exhausting herself with attempted relationships with Derek, Alex, and McSteamy, Dr. Addison Montgomery is driving down the coast to her own series, Private Practice, which promises new love triangles for Addison and her Grey’s Anatomy spin-off castmates in California.
The relationship fate of Meredith and Derek hangs in limbo at this point. Last season, Derek was tempted at his favorite watering hole by a young woman offering drinks and a seductive smile. He walked away last year, but as Season 4 of Grey’s begins, the mystery woman appears at Seattle Grace as an intern. Thicken the plot with the twist that she happens to be Meredith’s little half-sister, Lexie. Expect Dr. Derek, aka McDreamy, to become intoxicated with the sisterly love.
Unless a new love interest shows up for Izzy, expect her feelings for George to stay, creating fertile grounds for more of George’s crises of conscience and an eventual show down with Callie.
Cristina Yang, formerly left at the altar by Dr. Preston Burke, will need a remedy to lovesickness this season on Grey’s Anatomy. Whether she takes out her anger on “love ’em and leave ’em” new interns or looks for love in another mentor, remains to be seen.
The new cast of interns will add to Grey’s Anatomy love triangles, as former interns, Meredith, Izzy, Alex, and Cristina move up at Seattle Grace to residents. Only George will be left behind as a repeat intern, after failing his medical boards. Expect Season 4 of Grey’s Anatomy to provide more of the familiar, twisted and tangled relationship webs and love triangles that have pushed this Emmy Award nominated show to the top.
Grey’s Anatomy begins its fourth season on Thursday, September 27 at 9 pm/10c on ABC.
