Turner Falls State Park – A Worthy Road Trip
Tall trees, a powerful waterfall, clear, crisp water, giant tadpoles, mysterious castles and cool caves, as well as a giant water slide, ice cream store and diving board are all part of the allure at the vacation destination. At Turner Falls State Park in Oklahoma, there’s something for kids and adults.
Things to Do at Turner Falls State Park in Oklahoma
Swimming
Make sure your kids bring a swimsuit. Turner Falls is more than just eye candy. Swim just below the waterfall in a clear, deep swimming area. If your kids are over the age of 3, make sure to check out the giant water slide and diving board just beyond the state park entrance.
Hiking
If you’re looking to get some exercise after a long road trip, Turner Falls has a number of hiking trails for kids and adults of all ages. For a low-key hike, check out the flat, scenic, shaded trail that runs along a small creek just beside the waterfall. If you want something more challenging, attempt the rocky uphill trek along the waterfall. It leads to a couple of caves that are worth checking out. Or traverse the steep, concrete stairs that lead to the castles and some incredible lookouts.
The Castles
The castles are quite a sight for kids and adults, and they make a great setting for photos.
Advisories
As with any major state park, if you want to avoid the hoards, don’t go on a holiday (or weekend if you can avoid it). Late spring and early fall are key times to take your kids.
Amenities at Turner Falls State Park
Turner Falls has a number of well-kept bathrooms throughout the park. At the entrance, there are a couple of shops, including an ice cream store (though it wasn’t open in May) and plenty of snack machines. There are convenience stores just outside of the park; however, I would recommend bringing a lunch. You can find plenty of shaded benches to have your picnic.
