I’m quite sure there are a number of locations folks boast of having ideal living conditions all year long. But, if you have never been to Virginia Beach, Virginia, you haven’t found the ideal location.
Let me state up front that I am a New Englander by birth. Actually, there is an old saying that I will have to admit is true. “You can take the girl out of New England, but you can’t take New England out of the girl.” That does not alter the fact that, having lived in Virginia Beach for the past 30 years, even I am willing to admit this is the ideal place to live. Given the choice of shoveling snow, or cutting grass all year, I’ll take the grass cutting any time.
To begin with, we have water everywhere. We have the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay at our doorstep. At the oceanfront we have events from spring through fall, other than the usual beach, resort strip, vacationers, hotels, restaurants, and various entertainment spots. We have sand volley ball tournaments, East Coast Surfing competitions, Boardwalk Art Show, and we wind down the summer season with Neptune Festival.
In addition to the above mentioned activities, we have wonderful fishing in this area and folks fish just about year round. And since we have a splendid Marine Science Museum, we have whale watching boat tours for an up close and very personal look at these marvelous creatures.
At the Chesapeake Bay, known as “Chicks Beach”, we have the “Low Rent Regatta” which is a takeoff on the huge regatta held at the oceanfront. It’s a spoof of sorts because to qualify for the “Low Rent Regatta” one only needs ‘something’ that will float. Lots of fun and lots of laughs. The Bay boasts lovely beachs that rival the oceanfront and has the added charm of a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel… all 17 miles of it.
In addition to all this waterfront, we are blessed with NAS Oceana which is about the largest Naval Air Station in the country. In addition to daily displays of flying expertise by our highly trained navy pilots, we host a number of air shows throughout the year.
We have a wonderful park/playground/skateboard bowl called Mt. Trashmore. It’s a small mountain by comparison to Mt. Rushmore, but we love it. It was entirely built from land fill debris many years ago. It was the first of two man-made mountain parks located in Virginia Beach. Folks gather there all through the year for picnics, carnivals, fund raising events, and 4th of July celebrations. There is a lake where local scale model boat builders race in competition and for the entertainment of spectators.
Our weather is beautiful most of the time. We can actually use our beaches from early April through October most years. Winters are generally mild, and seldom do we ever get snow. Our only bad winter weather consists of rain, but for the most part, we sail through winter with little if any major storm events. Spring comes early and summer stays late.
In the past few years our fair city has built a Town Center with a major hotel, office buildings, shops, restaurants, theaters and condominiums, all across the street from one of our two shopping malls. We also have numerous shopping centers throughout the City of Virginia Beach, all with nationally known stores.
Virginia Beach has a fantastic municipal center located in the southern portion of the city. It is old colonial style although much of it is new, yet in keeping with the original design. It contains all of our local government offices, courthouses, police and fire departments, and the main jail. On first appearance one would think it was a college campus. In addition to the municipal center, there are precincts located throughout various parts of the city, as well as fire departments. We have an all volunteer rescue squad whose services are free. This is a service everybody is eager to supports through fund-raisers. And finally, we have three local hospitals and a new facility partially open and will be in full swing shortly.
There is nothing more we could ask for in the way of services and up to the minute facilities. There are recreation centers and parks in every area of the City which serve folks of all ages. Each recreation center has a swimming pool, arts and crafts, pool, basketball courts, weight rooms, and every conceivable amenity for staying healthy, active and happy.
Virginia Beach is becoming a golf destination for our northern neighbors as we play golf all year long here. We have a soccer and field hockey stadium with newly completed ball fields across from it. And last but not least, we have an amphitheater to host concerts and various entertainment venues throughout the year.
Yes, I would have to say, living here in Virginia Beach, Virginia is definitely the most ideal place to live. There are no extreme weather changes; we have all of the amenities one could wish for, and there is something for all ages all year long. Even if you can’t move here, you really ought to come visit us. We can’t wait to show off all the new facilities that have come to our mid-Atlantic coastal city.
