Located in the mountains of West Virginia, Blackwater Falls State Park is one of the most visited parks in the state. Named for the 50 foot waterfall in the Blackwater River the park offers a wooden walkway that leads visitors on a short hike through the woods to an overlook near the falls. The river gets its name from natural processes that color the water ‘black’.
Blackwater Falls State Park offers a variety of accommodations to visitors. There are 54 air conditioned lodge rooms that offer standard comforts. The lodge has a restaurant open to the public where guests dine in front of an impressive view of the countryside. The park also has 26 air conditioned deluxe cabins with stone fireplaces and private bathrooms. The park has a limited number of ‘pet friendly’ cabins. Lodge and Cabin guests have an indoor pool available for use as well. The park has a 65 site campground with central showers and restrooms, laundry facilities, and a dump station. 30 of the sites have electrical hookups. The park also provides a conference center that can accommodate about 200 people depending on the occasion.
A variety of items can be purchased at one of the park’s two Gift Shops. One is located near the falls area and one in the lodge. West Virginia Glass and other handmade items are of particular interest to shoppers.
The park offers over 20 miles of hiking trails to challenge and entertain hikers of all levels. As with most West Virginia State Parks, Blackwater Falls offers nature programs for children and adults at various times of the year to assist in the exploration of the plants and animal indigenous to the area. The normal picnic areas, game courts and playground equipment are also available for visitor use. Several scenic overlooks provide good vantage points of the natural wonders of the area.
The park itself sits in the center of many activities and sites of interest making it an ideal place to stay for a fun family vacation. Located in the vicinity are Canaan Valley State Park (offering skiing and mountain biking), Timberline Ski Resort, and Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. The entire area is encompassed by the Monongahela National Forest. Public Hunting and Fishing is available in a multitude of areas around Blackwater Falls State Park. In addition to stocked trout, native trout also live in many of the regions water. Please note that the section of the Blackwater River in the park is “catch and release” only.
