Near death experiences are quite common and have been recorded through history. You may have heard someone who nearly died saying that they experienced their whole life flashing in an instant right before their eyes. Some may scoff and say the experience is just a hallucination that the person has while near death. I’m not so sure that is true. I’ve read lots of books on NDE’s and one sticks out in my mind. The book is called Life After Life, and it’s author is Dr. Raymond Moody. He is the first person to ever coin the expression near death experience.
No two near death experiences are the same; they are as individual as the person having it. Some experiences may be in context to their religious beliefs. They may see a long dark tunnel with a bright light at the end. That light may be perceived as God or the heavenly realm. When I had my NDE, I did not have a religious experience, yet I perceived something that I perceived as heavenly.
Usually when a person has a near death experience, they have an out of body experience, however all out of body experiences are not associated with death and dying. But for the purpose of this article, I will keep it focused only on the NDE. Many near death experiences are reported to be rather pleasant. There is a feeling of calm. The person may experience his/her spirit rising from the body and exiting. The person may be able to look down upon the lifeless body. The Spirit may take a bit of time to look around and then notice a bright light. The light may start out to be small and then become larger as the spirit of the person moves toward it. In some cases there is not a tunnel, but a very bright light that fills the room. The light is brighter than anything the person has ever seen, but his/her eyes are not bothered by the light.
Many people that experience NDE’s report being met by the spirits of departed loved ones. They are led to another realm, which could be a positive or very negative experience. A friend of mine had a car accident and in his NDE he went to what he perceived hell to be. His account of his experience gave me goose bumps on my arms and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Prior to his accident he says he was not a religious person. He had no affiliation with a church. His accident left him in a state between life and death when he collided with a tree. His spirit popped out of his head and immediately dark spirits took hold of him and dragged him to a door. The door opened and he was thrown into a shaft. He fell and fell and after an eternity of falling his descent slowed until he stood before the back side of hell. He was able to observe the flames without even being in them. He went on with his story and I was totally spellbound. He felt like he was going to be thrown into the flames, and he screamed out for God to save him. Instantly he was saved and woke up in a trauma center. He is now a Christian minister. It was that experience that changed his life.
My NDE was totally different. I also had a pleasant experience, but it was not the usual NDE, if there is a usual one. There was no tunnel that led me to a bright light; however it was no less extraordinary. I was very sick and admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital I worked. My blood oxygen level was very low, and I had trouble breathing. I could breathe in, but I could not breathe out easily. I had to really labor to breathe out so I could breathe in again. I continued to deteriorate during the night. My anxiety about not being able to breathe was somehow replaced with a feeling of calm. I drifted. I remember rising up to a standing position and I was standing on top of my own lifeless body. Next, I became aware of laughter. It sounded like kids having a wonderful time. Then a river of light came into view and I knew without a doubt that the voices I was hearing were coming from the river of light. The river was all different colors, and each color was the spirit of someone who had departed. I stood there watching. I looked back at my body and felt no attachment there, and suddenly I made the plunge. It was like diving from a diving board. I flew into space and became one with the river of light. It was wonderful! I was free! Then just as soon as I experienced this wonderful new realm, it was over. I was kicked back to my body. It was like flying in reverse and I landed back inside my body with a thud.
The pain was unmerciful! I awoke with a nurse digging her knuckles into my sternum. There were people all around me, checking the leads to the cardiac monitor, and one nurse was giving me a bolus of something through my IV line. I recovered in a few days, and I mentioned to my doctor about the experience I had. He dismissed my account as a hallucination, rather than a real experience. Maybe I will never know. There will always be skeptics that don’t believe in the NDE, but I believe it was real, and it comforts me to know that when I die I have nothing to fear.
