The quest for healthy foods is one that becomes an obsession for many. Of course, with so many different products on the market, and the fact that there is little to set these products apart does not make matters and better. However, it is often the supplements and health products that we overlook that can be the most beneficial. Sometimes, it is even the products that we do not know about which can be incredibly beneficial to our lives. This latter proposal is definitely true in regards to a substance known as “spirulina”, a blue green algae that is readily available and contains many healthy nutrients.
While it may seem easy to shy away from an algae, or at least fail to believe that it has many healthy properties, those in search of a healthy, easy to find supplement should embrace spirulina rather than avoid it. There are a number of things that make spirulina so unique, and one of the most important is the conditions that it grows in. The algae grows only in fresh water, in warm conditions, however, the algae also requires an alkaline rich environment to prosper. These unique growing conditions contribute to the overall benefits of spirulina, and are some of the primary reasons why the plant is so healthy. Namely, unlike nutrients which are gathered from cold water plants, the nutritional value of spirulina will not diminish when stored in a warm atmosphere or when it is transported in order to be processed. In short, this means that a person is getting the full nutritional value of spirulina every time they take it in. Of course, as could be guessed, the alkaline rich environments in which the plant thrives act as an effective and natural barrier against other organisms and potentially harmful bacteria or pathogens. Once again, this means that spirulina is an almost completely pure substance, thus guaranteeing the heath benefits that are derived from it.
However, while we can now see what makes spirulina an excellent food source, the mystery remains as to what makes up the algae that causes it to be so healthy. The make up and components of spirulina are truly something work marveling at. Because the algae strides the border between plant and animal (having animal like cells but without a definite cell wall) it has an incredibly high amount of protein, however, because of it’s plant like nature, there is no cholesterol or other fats that are associated with this protein, meaning that a person can supplement their protein intake without the risk of adding too much cholesterol or gaining weight. Spirulina contains a host of vitamins and nutrients, including essentials such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6 Vitamin B12, iron, calcium and many more essential nutrients, all available in a single plant.
Knowing that all of these nutrients and vitamins lie within spirulina, it should seem obvious that the plant has many health affects. However, the actual number of benefits and positive effects that come about from eating spirulina may be surprising. Because of the high presence of so many vitamins, spirulina helps to fight fat and reduce levels of unhealthy cholesterol. The plant has also been shown to help out with immune systems, raising the ability of the body to fight against invaders. Spirulina also acts as a powerful and effective anti-oxidant, and even has the capacity to help with cleaning out the body, as well as promoting digestive health.
Of course, all of this information may have a person wondering where they can pick up some spirulina, and even some affective ways to take the supplement. Luckily, spirulina is easy to find at any health food store, and even larger grocery stores may carry the supplement. It is generally found in pill form, in doses between three and ten grams. However, many have found that they actually enjoy the taste of spirulina, and that it can be sprinkled into juices or over fruits and other foods to add some taste and health benefits to almost any dish.
Even though it may sometimes seem as if the quest for healthy food is one without an end, there is no reason to give up hope. Especially not when foods such as spirulina, which provide a lot of benefits with low cost and no side affects are readily available. There is no reason not to eat healthy or to attempt to have good health, and in that quest, knowledge about such vital and important supplements like spirulina is a primary component.
