Action movie star Vin Diesel is also an avid video game fan. He took his interests to the next level when he founded Tigon Studios. With one excellent game under its belt in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, the game development studio is about to release two games at the same time: Wheelman and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
Wheelman is particularly interesting since it is a completely new project from Tigon Studios. Can it end up being as successful as The Chronicles of Riddick series? Find out in this hands-on preview of Wheelman for the Xbox 360.
Vin Diesel, at least his virtual avatar, plays the role of undercover cop Milo Burik. As a driver for hired, he must penetrate the underground world of Barcelona in order to stop a heist.
Aside from the bad character models, Wheelman looks great. What’s especially impressive is the steady frame rate even with many chaotic things happen on screen at once.
As you may have expected, Vin Diesel will voice Milo Burik. The cinematic soundtrack also keeps the atmosphere intense.
Wheelman is mainly an open-world driving game similar to the Driver series.
Similar to Grand Theft Auto, you can explore a big open-world city. Arriving at a certain spot will unlock missions. Although some are done on foot, a majority of Wheelman missions involves driving a car. The game is highly intense and immensely enjoyable whether if you are racing, taking out a vehicle or running from cop cars.
A big reason for that is the versatility of driving. You won’t be simply driving a vehicle in Wheelman. In order to be successful in the game, you need to airjack cars around you and destroy the opponent’s cars.
You also have several special moves in Wheelman. All of them depend on the Boost Focus Guage, which builds up when you drift and smash objects. Be careful though, as the meter will go down if you hit pedestrians and traffic signals. Once the Boost Focus Guage is full, you can either boost your car speed or slow down time so that you can improve you aim.
Here is the control setup for Wheelman:
Left Analog: steering/ move

Left Directional Button: radio station down
Right Directional Button: radio station up

Wheelman is shaping up to be a surprise hit. Everything surrounding this game is simply solid. Not to mention that it is also getting some help from Hollywood veterans on the script and soundtrack.
You can see how good Wheelman is for yourself when it comes out in late March for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
