According to the essay, “BUSH’S ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD”, by Bob Herbert, President Bush is not only completely disregarding environmental issues, but he is also taking actions against helping the environment. This is a disturbing issue of importance to the American people.
The president has completely ignored reports from his own officials explaining that global warming will cause disturbing consequences to occur. Climate changes will affect everyone. Appallingly President Bush refused to sign The Kyoto Protocol, a treaty meant to help cut back the production of the gases that cause global warming. He has also failed to regulate the production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Both of these moves were in opposition to where he had claimed to stand on the issue during his campaign.
President Bush is cutting funds from Superfund, a program that cleans up toxic waste sites. This program has been helping to reduce the pollutants in 33 waste areas. These sites, which are terribly unhygienic, are located within miles to many people. Some of them contain waste that can cause cancer. These places are a terrible danger and should be taken care of. Superfund is running out of funds needed to help not only the environment but the American people and instead of contributing money he is taking it away.
He has loosened up on air quality regulations for coal fired power plants. Although this is good for the owners of industrial companies, this is not good for anyone or the world. Bush’s lack of concern for nature and complete disrespect for the environment has even cause and top official at the Environmental Protection Agency to resign from his position. Eric Schaeffer felt that policies passed by the Bush administration were detrimental to his goal. He can not be expected to aid in efforts to help the environment if his attempts are being thwarted by the head of the government.
It is outlandish to think that the man in charge of our government is foolish enough to be utterly inconsiderate of the consequences caused by global warming. He does not care about the fate of the world; he is concerned with the size of his bank accountants. He is unwisely contributing to problems in the environment instead of fixing them. It is astonishing to me that President is so selfish and heartless that he would even disregard the future of his own children. Wouldn’t even the most thoughtless of people want to leave something good for the future generations?
