If you’re traveling through the Windy City before Labor Day weekend, or are a local resident in search of some fun activities to say goodbye to summer, Chicago offers plenty of options with a lineup of festivals and performances throughout August. Whether you’re tasting the best of Greece at the food fest, or getting a dose of the arts at the Bucktown Arts Festival, here are some great things to look forward to during the last days of summer:
Kick things off in true Midwestern fashion at Lollapalooza, a three-day affair starting on August 3 in Chicago’s Grant Park. This year’s lineup includes Tom Schraeder, Mickey Avalon, Ben Harper, and Daft Punk. Pearl Jam leads the way for this elaborate event that draws crowds nearing the million mark. Tickets are still available for purchase online.
Get that Afro out of the closet and head on over to Retro on Roscoe, scheduled for August 4 starting at 10 p.m. This popular event will feature three live bands, plenty of beer and food, and an arts showcase. Call (773) 665-4682 for more information.
The City of Chicago stages a terrific Air and Water Show each summer, and this year’s event takes place on August 18 and 19. Watch the Blue Angels swoop down to start things off, followed by choreographed flyovers of the A10 Tank Killer, Stealth B2 bomber, F15, and F15 fighter jets. The best place to watch is on North Avenue Beach; be sure to catch the US Army Parachute Team on North Avenue Beach! Call (312) 744-3370 for more information.
Between the air and water performances, make your way to Smith Park on West Grand for Ukrainian Fest, also on August 18 and 19. This event is sponsored by the Ukraine Congress Committee for a showcase of food, music, and cross-cultural activities. Call (773) 772-4500 for more information.
For an authentic Greek experience, be sure to make a stop at the Taste of Greece on N. Halstead. This free event is one of the best places to sample local food vendors and carts, along with live music and plenty of fair-style activities. Last year’s team welcomed the area’s only Greek Bobsled Team, and you’re sure to find plenty to do all day as you explore each area. The Taste of Greece takes place on August 25 and 26; call (847) 509-8050 for more information.
It’s a grand gathering of local artisans and community talents at the Bucktown Arts Fest, taking place on August 25 and 26 at Senior Citizen’s Park. This festival has become an annual tradition since 1985, and you’ll find plenty of photographers, musicians, poets, dancers, and sculptors mingling with the crowds. You’ll get to explore some creative showcases and special events at this lively get together; call (312) 409-8305 for more information.
From food festivals to music showcases, Chicago is always buzzing with activity each season. Count down the days of summer this year by taking in any of these community events. You’re sure to find something for everyone in the family!
