Sunless tanning has come a long way since the orange tones we used years ago. It’s amazing the array of colors that are available no matter what your skin tone you can find your perfect sunless tan product that will look natural.
The active ingredient in sunless tanners is the Dihydroxyacetone or, DHA. It combines with an amino acid in your skin, creates a chemical reaction and helps to turn you a lovely brown color. This chemical has been FDA approved, and all of the major skin cancer foundations support their use.
If you are trying to decide which medium of sunless tanner will be right for your the sunless tanner spray or the sunless tanner lotion, you will find it is a matter of preference. My personal preference having used both mediums is the lotion, or the sunless tanner spray, sprayed on and then rubbed in. I find that the lotions are more cost effective, and its easier to get a nice even application. When I have used the sprays and not rubbed them in, the result has been uneven, and in some cases blotchy, not a good look for anyone.
My favorite has been the Jergens Natural Glow with skin firming ingredients, sunless tanners which build up over time. The product contains DHA as described above, and Erythrulose. Erythrulose combined with DHA causes the tan to develop more gradually, and it’s believed it will provide a more long lasting sunless tan. This for me is the easiest way to maintain my tan. I don’t need to worry as much about the palms of my hands becoming brown, because it builds over a few days of use. I just apply it as my regular moisturizer daily to maintain my tan. The on caveat is that I cant use this on my feet and I have to use a non tanning lotion for them. Always remember that sunless tanners work even more effectively on thick skin, which is why you will see girls with orange feet and hands, if they don’t wash it off right after they apply.
I have used a number of spray tanners; I don’t recommend anyone should use these unless they have it done by a professional, in my experience these are impossible to apply in an even manner. Whats more they dry so fast you cant see where you have already applied it. I used Neutrogena’s Micro Mist sunless tanning spray, and my results were blotchy and uneven. I tried it only on one leg, and I had to wear pants for the next week until it wore off. When I was ready to try again I applied it and rubbed it in, and this really did give me a lovely glow that looked totally natural. It comes in Light, Medium and dark shades so you can choose how tan you would like to be. If you have a good friend you can stand in your shower stall wile they spray you all over, this is the best way to try to get this all over in an even semi-professional manner.
If you can afford it, a Mystic UV-free tan applied in a professional tanning salon is the way to go. It will run you about $25 per application; while it is expensive to maintain, if you have a big event like a wedding or vacation coming up you can have this applied and then maintain it with the Jergen’s. This is what I have done in the past and it has worked wonders for me.
If you are very pale or are a red head you may need to try a few different brands before you find your perfect shade. See the link at the end of the article to connect with the Jergen’s website and sign up for coupons and freebies, all that testing can be expensive.
Regardless of the type of tanner you use its important to note some important tips to getting a great sunless tan. Be sure to buy a good loofah or body brush so that you can totally exfoliate your body before you begin. Bits of dry skin that fall off after application will leave you spotty, not cute! I had this happen on my forehead once, and I would not wish it on my worst enemy.
Pull your hair back if it is light colored, blonde hair will turn brown with these products so if this is a concern pay special attention not to get it in your hairline wile applying.
Make sure you don’t get your chosen sunless tanner between your toes, or on the soles of your feet, if you do wash it off right away! Be sure to wash your hands also when you are finished so you don’t end up with brown palms. Apply a small amount to a cotton ball and use this to carefully apply the tanner to the backs of your hands, be sure to rub it in evenly with a dry cotton ball when you are done so its nice and even.
Your sunless tan will last 7-10 days and you can reapply it then. If you are using the Jergen’s you can apply this kind of product every day to maintain a nice tan year round.
