A couple of years ago a lot of movies, especially the summer blockbusters, were experiencing disappointing box office numbers. Many people wondered why people had stopped going to the movies as often. Now 2007 has just ended and it was the most successful year at the theaters ever. There were a long of successful movies, a lot exceeded expectations and four movies ended up breaking the record for the biggest weekend in the history of the month it was released.
Since four different movies broke the record for the highest opening weekend in its month’s history I figured I would update everybody with the new list of highest grossing opening weekends for each month.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Star Wars: Special Edition
Gross: $35.9 million
None of the original Star Wars movies or the new trilogy have broken records for the best opening weekend for its month. The only Star Wars related movie with that distinction is Star Wars: Special Edition.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Passion of the Christ
Gross: $83.8 million
It doesn’t surprise me that Passion of the Christ broke records for the month it came out. It’s the only movie that I’ve ever seen people take bus loads of people to see.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: 300
Gross: $70.8 million
300 might have been the surprise movie of the year. I don’t think anybody expected it to make the amount of money it did. 300 was just the first of four movies this year to break the record for highest grossing opening weekend in the history of the month.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Anger Management
Gross: $42.2 million
April’s record is not very high so perhaps somebody will knock off Anger Management this year but for now it has the lead.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Spider-Man 3
Gross: $151.1 million
The good news for anybody trying to break the record for May is that there are more and more huge blockbusters being released in May. The bad news is they have to dethrone the movie with the record for highest opening ever.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Gross: $93.6 million
The Harry Potter movies have bounced all over the place, opening in several different months. They should make 12 Harry Potter movies, one for each month, and see how many records they break.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Gross: $135.6 million
The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie did well enough for everybody to see the sequel. Unfortunately the third movie didn’t do as well after everybody saw the second.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: The Bourne Ultimatum
Gross: $69.2 million
The Bourne Ultimatum was the third movie this year that broke the record for the highest grossing opening weekend in the history of the month.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Sweet Home Alabama
Gross: $35.6 million
There is clearly a lull between the blockbuster season and the Christmas season because Sweet Home Alabama’s $35.6 million is the lowest gross for a movie that has its month’s record.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Scary Movie 3
Gross: $48.1 million
I guess its fitting that the record for October belongs to a movie called Scary Movie even though it is actually a comedy.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Gross: $102.6 million
Not only did Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire break the record for best opening weekend in November but it also surpassed the Prisoner of Azkaban’s great opening weekend.
Top Grossing Opening Weekend: I Am Legend
Gross: $77.2 million
I Am Legend was the fourth and final movie this year that broke its month’s record for best opening weekend. I Am Legend topped all three Lord of the Rings movies.
