God of War and Gran Turismo are easily the two of the most popular first-party franchise for Sony. However, the Playstation 3 has been on the market for more than two years now and it still hasn’t got a true sequel to either of those franchises (Gran Turismo HD and Gran Turismo: Prologue are basically demos).
This holiday season will be a crucial time for Sony, especially with the Playstation 3 continuing to struggle against the competition. For that reason, they need to release either God of War III or Gran Turismo 5 to headline their holiday lineup. So which game is more likely to be released in 2009? Let’s compare several elements.
God of War II was released in 2007. Theoretically, God of War III could have started production in the same year. The last real Gran Turismo was released in 2005. However, Polyphony Digital, the development team behind the series, spent the subsequent few years working on Gran Turismo HD for the Playstation 3. That project was later scrapped and was released as a free demo on the Playstation Network in 2006. Either way, Gran Turismo 5 has a head start against God of Wart III.
God of War III will be the first game made specifically by SCE Santa Monica Studio. However, they have helped out on several projects on the system, including Warhawk. While Gran Turismo 5 will also be the first real game by Polyphony Digital, it is technically their third project with the Playstation 3. In terms of experience, both developers are equally familiar with developing for the Playstation 3.
God of War III is going to take the intense action series into the next level with even grander gameplay scenarios than previous games (i.e. massive moving levels). Even with so much added to the God of War III, it doesn’t quite compare to Gran Turismo 5. This is because the racing series is known for its hyper-realism. Every racing track has been built exactly the same as their real life counterparts; not to mention that every car models are detailed in even the smallest of ways.
Finally, God of War III won’t have any online multiplayer support at all. Gran Turismo 5, on the other hand, is going to have some ambitious online features. In addition to the races, players can expect a robust number of community features.
So because of the complexity and feature-packed nature of Gran Turismo 5, God of War III has a better chance at coming out in 2009.
