Whitney Houston’s debut album was released in 1985. There are several songs that still stand out and are remembered today. This was one of the first albums that I ever purchased. I remember listening to this album (on cassette) over and over again, and enjoying all of the songs on it. There is a reason why Whitney Houston became such a big success, and this album had a lot to do with it.
“How Will I Know” is an energetic song that really defines the 80s. It’s upbeat, fun to dance to, and still is enjoyable today. This song catapulted Whitney’s album to number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, where it stayed for 14 weeks.
“The Greatest Love of All” is another memorable song from this album. This ballad has wonderful dynamics, a positive message, and an ending note with a lot of feeling and depth to it. Her vocals in this song are absolutely phenomenal.
“Saving All My Love For You” was Whitney Houston’s second single, and was the first to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This soulful song starts out softly and builds up in a fantastic ending. The subject matter, about having an affair with a married man, isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but the music is good.
“All At Once,” which wasn’t released as a single, is another song that I really enjoy off this album. It’s a sad ballad about losing love. It is sung well, and when I listen to the song, I can really feel the emotions. Listening to it can take my breath away.
Jermaine Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass perform duets on this album in the songs “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do,” “Take Good Care Of My Heart,” and “Hold Me.” These weren’t my favorites, but they are part of a great album that I have enjoyed listening to over and over again. It is a shame that Whitney Houston decided to start taking drugs and make a mess of her life, because she had such a great talent, and this album is a perfect example of that.
