For many years, puppets have been used in horror movies to cause certain reactions in horror movie fans. Many of these portrayals have even caused certain fans to gain phobias of puppets and toys that resemble puppets. What is it, though, about puppets that can ignite raging fires of fear inside the minds of some horror movie fans?
Like Frankenstein’s monster, puppets from horror movies are constructs. These are, “beings,” that are created by man that promote the thought that man can be equal to God by means of the creation of life. The creators set out to create a life that will rival humanity, but usually create a life that becomes dangerous to humanity.
Pushing for equality with God has been a focus of horror for many years. Horror fans know that it is wrong to mess with certain forces in the universe. This is caused by the fears that are instilled in many of us as we grow up about how men and women should not try to be equal to God (remember that whole Original Sin thing). Like Frankenstein’s monster, horror movie puppets are a representation of these fears.
Puppets are usually viewed as a symbol of childhood innocence and imagination. Horror movie puppets twist this symbolism and bring a stain to the thought of purity and innocence to childlike toys. In our imaginations when we are young, puppets become real living beings until we realize that they are simply extensions of a man or woman behind a curtain. We still enjoy them because they are representations of fun-loving entertainment that is either used as a distraction from life, or used to teach us a life lesson.
Instead, horror movie puppets taint this symbolism. Instead of being there for our enjoyment, they are there to cause our, or someone else’s, demise. They are usually an extension of a person, but that person also will usually have some kind of twisted agenda.
The compromise of any belief that we have had since childhood will cause fear in a person. The subconscious realization that puppets might not just be there for our entertainment and nurturing counters the sense of security that we gained from the adults that were around us when we were young. It could mean that they were all wrong. This could be the greatest fear that is caused by horror movie puppets.
The next time that you sit down to watch a horror movie that uses puppets as the villain, think about the fears that travel through your mind. See how you relate these fears, and how they affect you. You might be surprised at the level of fear that horror movie puppets can bring you.
