A study that was lead by a researcher of the National Institute of Occupational Health in Oslo has recently shown that children who are born first tend to have IQ’s that are higher than children who are not born first. The IQ’s of first born children in the study were, on average, 2.3 points higher than children who were not born first. A child’s genes were often believed to be the reason that first born children are smarter. This study proved this theory wrong. It also tested second born children in situations where the first born child had passed away. The same results were seen among these children as well. So, why is it that first born children tend to be smarter than other children? There are several believed reasons which may explain why first born children tend to have higher IQ’s.
Parents Pay More Attention To First Born Children
Parents often tend to give a lot of attention to their first born children. They spend the most time playing with them, trying to teach them and interacting with them in general. However, by the time that the second child is born, parents tend to be a bit exhausted from doing all of these things. They tend to give the second child less attention than the first, hoping that the first child’s attention towards the second will make up for this lack of attention. Overall, the attention which is given to the first born child may be the main reason that that these children tend to have higher IQ’s.
More Money Can Be Spent On First Born Children
When there is only child in the family, more money can often be spent on the child. Once there are more children, the amount of money that is spent on each child decreases. The interactive games, books and videos which may have helped the first born child learn are often not thought about for the other children. First born children also may get the opportunity to interact with other children at daycares, but once there are more children in the family, daycares may no longer be an option due to financial reasons. It is definitely safe to say that more money can be part of the reason that children who are born first have higher IQ’s than other children.
More Pressure Is Often Put On First Born Children By Parents
First born children often experience the most pressure when it comes to academics. Parents are constantly on their backs for them to get good grades. This is not only because they want their children to do well and get into college, but they also expect their first born children to act as a role model for their other children. Once they have seen their first born children do as good as they would like them to, they more or less look at their role of being an influential parent when it comes to good grades as done. Since they are so exhausted with it, they tend to put less pressure on their other children to do well – which may cause them to not work to their full potential when it comes to school.
