For almost a decade, many of us have referred to Las Vegas by it’s nickname of Sin City. From time to time I am asked, “Why is Las Vegas called Sin City?” The answer can be found when you take a look at the Seven Deadly Sins and see how they relate the Las Vegas.
When thinking about cities in the world, can you think of any that display the classic Seven Deadly Sins better than Las Vegas? We will take a quick look at the Seven Deadly Sins and see how they relate to Las Vegas being known as Sin City.
Let us start out with the most obvious of the Seven Deadly Sins the refer to Las Vegas, and make it Sin City – Greed. There is no mistaking that it is greed that has built Las Vegas from the bottom up. Sin City has been built on the greed of those that created the casinos, and those that believe that they can win everything at the casinos.
The next of the Seven Deadly Sins to be looked at when answering, “Why is Las Vegas called Sin City,” would have to be Lust. Even though prostitution is not legal in Las Vegas, it surely does run rampant. There are prostitutes all over in Las Vegas that ad to the moniker of Sin City. A simple walk down the Las Vegas Strip will find hundreds of people handing out fliers and business cards reminding you that one of the profitable businesses in Las Vegas is also the oldest.
Envy is another one of the Seven Deadly Sins that can easily explain why Las Vegas is called Sin City. Most of the people that go to Las Vegas have some form of envy in their hearts for the riches that others have. Why else would they travel to a city where you have a slight chance of becoming richer than you could ever have imagined.
A trip into any of the casinos might make you realize that Gluttony is another one of the Seven Deadly Sins that points to why Las Vegas is called Sin City. Every casino has loads of restaurants where you can feed yourself to the breaking point. You can also easily get drunk in the matter of a few hours of free drinks coming to you every time you sit down to play a game.
Pride is one of the Seven Deadly Sins that is displayed best by the shopping areas around Las Vegas. A trip to any of the major malls in the area will prove this. Are there many malls around you where you can buy a $300 tie, or a $1,000 pair of shoes? Those that have the money also display their pride as they walk around the mall with their full bags of merchandise. Pride is another one of the Seven Deadly Sins that explains why Las Vegas is called Sin City.
Wrath is a little harder to pin as a reason why Las Vegas is called Sin City, until you succumb to it. Tensions run high in Las Vegas if a person is not winning. I have seen many times where people let Wrath take the better of them when they are in Las Vegas, and give in to the deadliest of the Seven Deadly Sins.
One might think that Sloth is a member of the Seven Deadly Sins that cannot be tagged as a reason why Las Vegas is called Sin City. Remember, though, you are on vacation when you are in Las Vegas. You are not doing anything to improve the greater good, which is one of the definitions of Sloth. Over-relaxation is another aspect of Sloth.
I might also mention that many religious organization consider gambling itself to be a sin. While gambling is not one the Seven Deadly Sins, it should be pointed out that this has gone a long way in answering why Las Vegas is called Sin City.
It should probably also be pointed out that many of the people that live in and around Las Vegas objected to the moniker of Sin City that many of the Las Vegas commercials promoted. The fact still remains, though, that Las Vegas earned the moniker of Sin City long before it became commonplace to call it by that alternative name.
