Depression runs in families, relatives and siblings. This article discusses one reason why siblings of a depressed patient are at higher risk of getting depressed. Siblings brought up in the same family are taught by the parents in a similar fashion. Their understanding of the values and facts in the world can be considered to be similar. Their level of understanding with regard to sources of depression is same and they fear and feel negative incidences in life with the same level of understanding. It should be noted here that we are talking about the understanding of the siblings. We are in no way talking about how they implement their understanding in their living. For instance, Allyson and Ashley are siblings and both have the understanding that smoking is a forbidden act in the society and is also injurious to health. They know that smoking habit can hurt their parents. Now, here the siblings have the same understanding of the effects of smoking but despite the understanding their behavior and personality differs. Allyson is a chain smoker and Ashley never smokes. Thus, it should be noted that the understanding of the siblings though being same their personality and behavior are different.
Parents are responsible for rooting the understanding from early childhood. This role is also played to some extent by the teachers and other people with whom the children come in contact. Understanding is a progressive phenomenon and therefore it undergoes several additions and subtractions with age. After an age, an individual does not readily accept the words of advice which are said to make him understand. This age when acceptance of new ideas for understanding comes to almost an end with respect to words of advice or knowledge is different for different individuals. It should be noted that it is the understanding of a person, thing or situation that makes an individual feel more or less about it. Thus, understanding implanted being almost same in the siblings brought up in the same family they are almost equally susceptible to depression and other related mental disorders. For instance, both Ashley and Allyson faced depression after being exposed to the physical harassment reality of a relative. This is because their understanding about security and self-concern with regard to external harassing modes of behavior was same. Thus, the level of understanding of an individual makes him understand the potential of negative incidences that take place in life and the reaction it demands.
