It is very often that we will turn on the news and see a news crew chasing after a certain local politician so that he or she can be questioned about a controversial decision or action. Certain local politicians are hounded by the Media more then others. Some are never questioned at all.
Some believe that the reason why certain politicians are not hounded by the local news is because they are not corrupt. This is not always the case.
In many cases, these politicians are not hounded because of the fact that they are not as important to the local political spectrum as someone else. A mayor of a town with two hundred residents is not going to be as news worthy as the mayor of a large major city.
Also, it is often found out after these small-time politicians leave office, that they gave substantial donations to charities that are backed by the local news teams. These donations are sometimes enough to keep the questionings away.
There are certain local politicians that will not be touched be certain stations, but will by others. This could be because of agreements between the station owners or managers, and the local politician.
It could also be that the local politician is so well liked that any story against him or her could have negative consequences for a Media outlet. Many people might not return to a station that hounds someone who they consider to be upright, and above certain mistakes.
There are certain local politicians that are going to naturally gain more local attention because of the fact that they are major players in the area. Notice that you will see the mayor of the largest city in the area often being hounded by reporters.
The larger the city, the more the local news groups can make something appear more interesting. These stories are going to sell more papers and gain more viewers on TV.
A major local politician could misappropriate $10,000 in money, and that will gain more attention then the small town mayor who misappropriates the same amount. Even though the $10,000 is a larger percentage of a smaller budget, it is not enough to sell out at newsstands, or cause you to turn off your favorite show to catch the story on TV.
You will also be able to tell when your local, “Sweeps Weeks,” are during the year. You will find that most of the news stories that are on your local TV are about corrupt politicians. There are even some politicians that will point this out to everyone.
If you think that you are living in a city with the most corrupt politicians in the area, think again. You might just be living in a city that has a mayor who has not figured out how to make friends with the local news people. You may have a mayor that can just sell more papers then everyone else.
