If you are into using plastic candy molds to make homemade treats then the Wilton Candy Melting Plate is worth checking out. Even more so if you like to use more than a few colors to paint in details. Using a regular plate or disposable one will give you good results but the Candy Melting Plate reduces mess, make clean up easier and saves you money in the long run. Instead of paying five dollars for twenty throw away candy melting trays, spend a little over three dollars and get something that can be used over and over again.

There are ten pods to the Candy Melting Plate, you don’t have to use every one of them to get great candy melting results as the chocolate gets heated evenly. You can use any type of chocolate that you want but you are going to want to stick with something that is a little on the small side and even with other pieces that you are melting. It is microwave safe so you never have to worry about it melting or getting tacky. This is easy to grip and hold on to and can make adding several colors to candy molds a lot easier than using a flat plate or disposable tray.
You get a standard sized decorating brush with the tray but chances are you are going to need a few others to get most jobs done. My best piece of advice is to make sure that your brushes are clean and dry before you start any candy making project. Water and chocolate do not mix and even one drop can ruin the candy you are working with. Other sized brushes can be purchased at craft and candy supply stores. Wilton also sells a “Decorator Brush Set” (product number 2104-9355, $1.69 for a set of three).
It only takes about ten to fifteen seconds to soften and melt the chocolate but if you are using something that has been refrigerated it may take a little longer. Do not over heat the chocolate or it will scorch, ruin the taste and be unusable. You can reheat it over and over but you will have to stir the chocolate when you remove it to break up clumps. Clean toothpicks are a great thing to use, you won’t have to worry about grabbing the wrong brush and they are an inexpensive investment.
In the middle of the Candy Melting Plate there is a long section; you can use this for your brushes but make sure that the tips don’t touch or the colors will get mixed. You can use this to melt larger pieces of chocolate but it will harden quicker and be a little trickier to work with. Cleaning it is simple; some hot water and soap is all you need to get it crystal clean. I have never had any issues with it staining or retaining colors but it is something that you can pop in the dishwasher if you don’t want to clean it by hand.
Is this safe for kids to use? With parental supervision it is. The tray doesn’t get super hot but the bottom of the pods can be warm. I like to put this on a large towel so that it retains the heat a little better that way you don’t have to keep running back to the microwave. This is not meant to be used in a regular oven or toaster oven so please observe the warnings on the package prior to use.
Is this a necessity? No, you could easily use a regular kitchen plate but the Candy Melting Plate makes melting several colors at one time a lot easier. It contains the chocolate so there is less of a mess, you can pop it back in the microwave to reheat it and cleaning it up is a complete breeze.
